Firefighters are facing the most difficult day of this year’s firefighting season, according to the Corps’ press representative, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, in his briefing.
Mr. Vathrakogiannis highlighted that in Attica alone today, Sunday, two large and dangerous fires occurred.
Fire in Plaka Kerateas
Referring to the fire in Plaka Kerateas, Mr Vathrakogiannis said it occurred before noon near scattered houses.
Due to the dangerous situation, in a context of strong northerly winds, 3 112 messages were sent to evacuate residents.
23 aerial vehicles (13 helicopters – 10 aircraft) operate periodically in the area, according to Vathrakogiannis.
Fire in Stamata Attica
As for the fire in Stamata Attica, according to the fire department representative, it is occurring near residential areas and spread quickly due to strong winds.
A total of five 112 messages were sent to inform, but also to evacuate residents.
14 aerial vehicles (6 helicopters and 8 aircraft) operate in the area.
