A man has been arrested for climbing onto the roof of Signal Iduna Park during the European Championship match between Germany and Denmark on Saturday night.
Dortmund police issued a statement on Sunday confirming the arrest. “At no time was there any danger to other people. Police have not yet been able to provide information about the man’s identity or his motive.”the statement said.
Police spokesman Peter Banderman said on Saturday: “A person climbed onto the roof of the stadium at 10:27 p.m. during the game. Police officers approached to speak with the individual and ensure his safe return from the roof. A police helicopter illuminated the roof of the stadium for this purpose.”.
The incident occurred after the match was temporarily suspended due to adverse conditions during a thunderstorm. Referee Michael Oliver stopped play in the 36th minute and took the players off the field amid thunder.
The match was halted for around 25 minutes before resuming and crowds that had gathered in the city’s fan zones were evacuated.
