Restrained optimists seem to be experts, so far, on the fire raging in Parnitha, as until now Strong winds hampered firefighting efforts.
The comment about the direction and intensity of the winds was made by EMY director Thodoris Kolidas through a post on social media, when talking about a renewed strengthening from the early hours of Sunday with lower intensities compared to today.
Kolydas’ post:
“Intensified wind field in Attica, mainly in the east, where wind gusts locally reach 8 to 9 Beaufort. In north Attica, in the Parnitha region, average intensities are lower, but locally wind gusts reach 7 at 8 Beaufort until 8pm on Saturday, whilst there will be a gradual weakening of the wind field overnight.
A new reinforcement is expected from Sunday morning with lower intensities than today”.

Fire Department Update
Earlier, the Fire Department’s press representative stated in an emergency briefing that in the Parnitha fire area the wind speed reached 50 kilometers, with gusts exceeding 100 kilometers per hour.
These conditions and the fact that there are high voltage poles in the area make the operation of aerial vehicles difficult.
For this reason, they mainly operated helicopters.
