The New York Times, with an article by its editorial team, invited the US President Joe Biden withdrawing from the race for the White House after Thursday’s disastrous debate against Donald Trump.
The editorial, titled “To Serve the Country, President Biden Should Drop Out of the Race,” describes the president in terms such as “shadow leader” as the 81-year-old head of state “failed his own test”.
“Mr. Biden has been a wonderful president. Under his leadership, the nation has flourished and begun to address a number of long-term challenges, while the wounds that Trump opened have begun to heal. But the greatest service to the nation that Mr. Biden can render now is to announce that he will not continue to seek reelection,” the editorial concluded.
Members of the Democratic Party also strongly question whether Biden is fit to take on another term. Amid the uproar, Biden, in an effort to limit the damage, assured yesterday that he could “get the job done” and secured the support of two of his Democratic predecessors, by Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
