She is asking for compensation from Russia Sri Lanka for the mercenaries who lost their lives in war in Ukraine.
In particular, in talks with Moscow during a delegation visit to Sri Lanka, the issue of compensation to the families of those killed and injured was raised, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sri Lankan representatives met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. The talks focused on compensation for the families of the 17 people killed and injured in the war., early termination of recruited contracts and payment of salaries. The number of injured was not mentioned in the statement from the Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At least 2,000 Sri Lankan mercenaries are involved in the war in Ukraine
In total, according to media reports, at least two thousand Sri Lankans are participating in the Russia-Ukraine war on each side.
The Russian Foreign Ministry did not disclose details of the meeting. Its statement said that during the meeting with Rudenko the parties discussed “current issues on the Russian-Sri Lankan agenda.” Russian state media did not report on the meeting.
Earlier, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that many Sinhalese were taken to war. The Russian side reportedly promised the mercenaries high salaries, internal jobs and citizenship.
Late last year, Lankan authorities closed an agency in the country that recruited civilians to fight on Ukraine’s side.
