A strong 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the central coast of Peru, the United States Geological Survey announced.
A tsunami warning was issued along some coasts.
The USGS revised an earlier magnitude estimate from 7 to 7.2 on the Richter scale shortly after the quake struck 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) offshore of Atiquipa. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which initially said there was no threat, later warned that waves of up to three meters (10 feet) were “likely along some coastlines.”
According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
