Donald Trump says his mugshot has boosted his popularity in minority communities
Donald called the event organized by black Republicans. “The mugshot is the best of all – it far surpasses Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, in fact… This is the number one mugshot of all time,” he told attendees gathered at a local barbershop.
“It’s really an amazing thing. Since it happened, the support among the black community and the Hispanic community has skyrocketed. It’s been incredible…” Trump boasted on the phone.
MSNBC multimedia producer and political writer Ja’han Jones called the 78-year-old’s statement ” “intolerant” It is “desperate.”
He stated that “it’s easy to assume” Black people would agree with “voting for a criminally indicted hatemonger like Trump just because he was arrested” if you “For starters, don’t trust the intelligence of black people.”
Conservative commentators previously agreed with Trump’s assessment
The event, which featured Trump surrogates such as former HUD Secretary Ben Carson and Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, was intended to be part of a larger outreach effort to black voters. However, local black voters were vastly outnumbered by reporters covering the questionable event.
Trump’s comments echo similar sentiments expressed by conservative media personalities last year. Fox News’ Jesse Watters claimed Trump’s photo “made him a sympathetic character in Black America” and made him a “martyr,” per MSNBC.
