The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix may have “launched” the… scenario that Max Verstappen could leave Red Bull and his previous responses on the matter did not express absolute commitment, however the three-time world champion clarified today (27/6) that he will “race” with the Austrian team in 2025 in Formula 1.
Verstappen was asked, at today’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, if he would like to put an end to the rumors, confirming 100% that he will remain with the constructors’ champions.
The world champion initially avoided answering the question directly, responding: “I think I’ve said this before. I mean, of course people are talking, but it’s more important that we have a very competitive car for the future. At the moment, of course, the differences are very small, but we are working very well as a team to try to improve further. I’ve certainly already spoken to the team, we are working and focusing on next year, to try to get back to being competitive”.
Asked if he might decide to leave as the 2025 car appeared not to be the best, Verstappen said that is not how the sport works.
“I have a long-term contract with the team, I’m very happy where I am and, as I said before, we are also already focusing on next year with things that we can implement in the car.” he added: “Well, I think that should say enough about where I’ll be riding next year”.
The answer did not entirely satisfy reporters, in a sport where answers are carefully worded to cover multiple contingencies, and Verstappen was asked a follow-up question, asking him to answer the question with a simple yes or no.
“Didn’t you notice that from my answer earlier?” said the Dutchman and added: “OK. Yes. And that’s what I said. We’re already working on next year’s car too. I think when you’re very focused on that, it means you’re also driving for the team.”.
