In a brief Instagram Live video on Wednesday, Donald Glover – aka Infantile Gambino – significantly clarified the explosion of unclear messages about his new album and film that appeared on the Internet the night before.
Several posts online said he has a project titled “Lithonia” coming on July 2, which was accompanied by an official-looking graphic and a photograph of letters projected onto a wall simply saying “Bando is coming.” All of these things were in line with the cryptic messages he has been putting out in recent weeks through his Gilga Radio show and website – Lithonia is a city near Atlanta, the setting of his popular TV series; Bando is part of the title of his upcoming album and film – but it was unclear where these messages came from, although some pointed to a post that briefly appeared on streaming distributor Audiomack before being taken down.
In a rambling conversation Wednesday night on Instagram Live — which was constantly interrupted by a lack of connectivity — as he wandered around his beloved California farm, Glover said that what will arrive on July 2 is a single titled “Lithonia.” , which is apparently a prequel to the album. “That (information) got out, it pissed me off,” he said. “I know who did this – Audiomack – no soup for you. You’re not going to get the album, that’s the path I’m on now.”
Glover spoke at length about how “we’re not having fun anymore” like people did when he was a kid, adding that “the most fun we had this year was a musical fight, which I loved,” referring to the musical battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. He had previously mentioned that “feeding cows is fun”, and then said “this release is about fun… this album is about fun. As if feeding cows were enjoyable.”
Someone off camera mentioned something suggesting that Glover wanted to turn off his cell phone, and he ended the video abruptly.
The farm, near Ojai, California, is also the base of his Gilga artist studio.
Glover kicked off this Easter egg-filled new release in April, when he announced in a dialogue about his Gilga venture that he would be releasing two new Infantile Gambino albums, the second of which would be the closing album released under that name, a soundtrack to his next film, “Bando Storm and the New World” (no information has been released about the film).
The first album, an updated version of their surprise release “3.15.20,” which was quietly released in March 2020, arrived in May under the original title, “Atavista.”
He later announced dates for “The New World Tour,” a massive trek across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, launching in August.
