The Lakers’ job could be JJ Redickfirst foray into coaching, but Chris Duhon says he’s pretty sure his former teammate is getting a lot of help on how to navigate the new job from none other than Mike Krzyzewski.
Duhon – who played with Redick at Duke and then again with the Orlando Magic in the NBA – says TMZ Sports …he thinks it’s more than likely that Redick will ask Coach K for advice on what his first moves should be in Los Angeles.
“I’m sure he could be getting some type of guidance from Coach K,” Duhon said. “Who’s saying, ‘Hey, make sure your team is X, Y, and Z as far as that fits your personality.'”
Redick has yet to confirm whether Coach K has been in his ear since he got the coveted position in the NBA last week … but he told the press that his former crew chief at Duke will have an influence on his coaching style anyway.
Duhon told us that for him, this means, at the very least, that the 40-year-old will always be prepared for all situations – as that was something Krzyzewski always preached to his guys when he managed the Blue Devil team.
As for whether there’s any chance the legendary college basketball coach would actually join Redick’s staff… Duhon made it clear he doesn’t see that happening — telling us, “Coach isn’t going anywhere.”
Still, with or without Krzyzewski at his side, Duhon says Redick has the basketball IQ to succeed in his new role…telling us that Redick didn’t become Duke’s all-time leading scorer “by accident.”
“We don’t play cupcakes,” Duhon said with a laugh.
