No further Harry Potter books for adaptation into films, and with the Fantastic Beasts film franchise failing to connect with audiences in the same way, Warner Bros. is doing the only thing they can do with their hugely profitable property: they’re turning JK Rowling’s original novels into a TV show.
We already knew that. But now we know the people who will be running the show. HBO and Warner Bros. announced today that the next Harry Potter The TV series will be produced and overseen by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and directed by Mark Mylod. Both previously worked on the acclaimed HBO series Succession.

Even though Rowling didn’t write a new Harry Potter romance in more than 15 years, the Harry Potter the franchise is still going strong thanks to continued interest in books and films, an ongoing Harry Potter plays in London and on Broadway, as well as numerous merchandise and several Universal theme parks. (A new one is being built in Orlando at Universal’s Epic Universe, which will open soon.)
Here’s HBO’s official description of its Harry Potter Show:
The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved “Harry Potter” book series by author and executive producer JK Rowling. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fans, full of fantastic details and much-loved characters that “Harry Potter” fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will bring “Harry Potter” and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the heart of the franchise and will be available to watch around the world.
HBO has not yet announced a planned release date, or any casting, for this new Harry Potter Series. Whoever is chosen to play these central roles will have some big wizard robes to fill.
