- 2025 Volkswagen Golf R output increases to 328 hp
- A manual transmission remains out of the question for the Golf R
- The Golf R gets a bigger touchscreen and more LED lighting
On Tuesday, Volkswagen revealed the Volkswagen Golf R 2025 updated. When it arrives in the US next year, it will cost more than the current model, according to VW. For more money comes more power and an improved design with more LED lighting.

The 2.0-liter turbo-4 has been boosted to 328 hp, up from the current 315 hp. VW didn’t detail how the new Golf gained 13 hp, but it’s probably the same or similar tune as the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition, which was then detuned for the US market. Performance is quicker, with 0 to 62 mph acceleration dropping from 0.2 seconds to 4.6 seconds. All-wheel drive remains standard, as does the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. No manual transmission will be offered because VW will not allow buyers #GiveAShift.

Identifying the updated Golf R won’t be difficult thanks to a revised front lighting signature. An LED unibrow now spans the entire front connecting the headlights, similar to that found on the electric ID.4. New lightweight 19-inch wheels fill the wheel wells and are said to be lighter than the current model’s wheels, but we’ll have to see what crosses the pond. The front bumper has been revised with reshaped intakes. The new rear diffuser and exhaust tips are now round instead of oval.

Inside the VW, it has been replaced by a new 12.9-inch independent touchscreen infotainment system that integrates AI and ChatGPT. The hated touch-based climate and volume controls are back, but it’s unclear whether they’re now backlit or not. Today’s Golf R’s touch-based controls are not.
A new Black Edition will hide the badge.
Pricing and features for the US will be announced closer to the arrival of the 2025 Golf R next spring.
