Fordyce is a small town in Dallas County. This shooting adds to at least 234 mass shootings that have occurred in 2024 alone. Two of those injured in the incident were police officers. Additionally, the shooter, Travis Eugene Posey, was injured and arrested.
The injuries sustained by the officers and the perpetrator were not life-threatening. Additionally, the remaining “civilian injuries range from non-fatal to extremely serious,” said Mike Hagar, Secretary of Public Safety and Director of the Arkansas State Police, during a press conference.
Police reportedly arrived promptly after citizens notified authorities that an active shooter was terrorizing the Mad Butcher supermarket.
An eyewitness shares an account of the shooting
The incident occurred at around 11:30 am on July 21. An eyewitness, David Rodriquez, told the outlet he initially thought the sounds of gunshots were fireworks. He then saw customers quickly fleeing the area. Some individuals hid in a store’s refrigerator to escape the gunfire. Councilman Roderick Rogers was on the phone with someone at the grocery store during the ordeal. He said, “Man, it was bad.” There was a shootout between the police and the “single suspect”, which resulted in the gunman being injured. The councilor said that the survivors are “traumatized,” and they are receiving “advice and everything set up at the moment.”
Hagar assured the citizens that there was no more “active threats to the community”.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to inform her followers that she was “informed” at the “tragic shot” and was in “constant” communication with the police on site. Furthermore, she thanked “Law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save lives.”
According to KARK, authorities later confirmed that 11 people were injured in the incident.
