Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate Malu Dreyer (SPD) has resigned after eleven years in office.
It is estimated that the state parliament will elect as his successor on July 10 the state’s until now Minister for Social Affairs, Alexander Schweitzer.

Dreyer was extremely popular in previous years, but his image took a severe blow following the deadly floods in his area in 2021.
At the time, her government’s Interior Minister, Roger Levens, resigned, but she never publicly apologized to citizens.
Now, he is stepping down a year and a half before the next state election.
At a press conference she gave earlier today, 63-year-old Malou Dreyer, who has disclosed that she suffers from multiple sclerosis for years, said that her strength is now limited, although she clarified that she is not tired of her work. “My batteries don’t charge as fast anymore. I had to realize now that my strength is running out and that the State deserves another person, with a lot of strength, to take on the role,” she added.
