Work is underway to demolish an air bridge at the height of the Isthmus of Corinth, which was damaged by the high thermal load, when tanker truck transporting fuel overturned at the location last night and it caught fire.
After the fire was extinguished, the amorphous mass of hardware that remained from the tanker was removed.
Due to the fire and subsequent explosions, new and old national highways were closed for hours, resulting in kilometer-long queues of day-trippers who suffered major inconvenience after being forced to turn back.
As for the tanker truck driver, he was freed without burns and transferred to Corinth hospital, with no other injuries.
Since the early hours of today traffic on the new national road towards Athens is operating normally, while traffic is diverted from the Loutraki exit towards Corinto. The old National Highway remains closed in both directions.
