Snoop Dogg considers being chosen to be a special correspondent for NBC’s coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris one of the greatest achievements of his life.
The “Gin and Juice” rapper expressed to ET’s Kevin Frazier how grateful he is for the opportunity to join NBC Olympics host Mike Tirico for the network’s primetime coverage. Snoop was tasked with providing his unique insight into what is happening in and around the Olympics in the City of Lights.
And what he appreciates most is that NBCUniversal allows him to be authentically himself.
“I’m going to do me, and what I love about the NBCUniversal team is they really want Snoop Dogg to bring what he brings; Stay within the realm of professionalism, but bring Snoop Dogg to the Olympics and I love that,” Snoop told ET. “I’m going to do my best to make sure I look and perform the part.”
Snoop’s unique sports commentary has gone viral on several occasions – such as in 2021 when he provided equestrian commentary during the 2020 Olympics – held in 2021 in Tokyo – in which he nicknamed the horse Mopsie (also known as Rave Horse) as “gangster” for his ability to “walk Crip”.
Of course, Snoop has blessed the world with his unique comments. No one will ever forget giving David Attenborough a run for his money in his”Plizzanet Earth with Snoop Dogg“segment in Jimmy Kimmel live. More recently, Snoop provided comments for the exhibition fight between former NBA star Nate Robinson and Logan Paul.
“It was a wake-up call to see that I can actually handle a big event,” Snoop said of his ability to commentate during that boxing match.
But Snoop will have challenges ahead, such as the various names he will have to learn to pronounce. But he has a plan B.
“Look, I’ll let Mike Tirico handle this,” he joked. “That’s not my section. They want me to be Snoop Dogg. (But) man, if they want to mess up the names, I’ll do the honors.”
Snoop says he grew up watching the Olympics and that all the eyes on the global event make it so special.
“I think what makes the Olympics special is that the whole world is watching it once and it’s a peace gathering,” he said. “Even though everyone is competing, it’s all about love, the athletes respect each other nationally. The countries, for once, are all on the same page. There’s no politics involved. It’s all about competition, sports, camaraderie, legacy , love, and just the history of the Olympics. So, actually being there… (is) probably (one of) the best things that’s ever happened to me.”
So what’s on Snoop’s Olympics bucket list? Get in the pool with none other than the legend Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with an impressive 28 medals (23 gold).
“I kind of want to get in the pool. I want to see what my 50-yard freestyle is like,” says Snoop. “I’m about to yell at Michael Phelps. Phelps, Aquaman, do you think you can teach me a lesson?”
What do you say, Phelps?
