Closer relationships with her European Union intends to create the British Labor Party, which is expected to come to power in Great Britain in the next parliamentary elections, with the aim of erasing its “resentments” Brexit.
This general election “is an opportunity to turn the page on past resentments after Brexit”, said David Lammy, 51, who is tipped to become Foreign Secretary in a Labor government.
The election date has not yet been defined, but voting is expected to take place in the second half of this year. The Labor Party has been leading the polls for months, with a 20-point lead over the ruling Conservative Party.
If the Labor Party comes to power, it aspires to “reestablish a structured dialogue with the European Union on the issues it deserves”, said David Lammy.
“Security Agreement”
The Labor Party, which has not governed for 14 years, mainly proposes negotiating a new “security pact” with the EU.
This agreement will allow for “strengthened coordination across a wide range of military, economic, climate, health, cybersecurity and energy security issues,” Lammy recently wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine.
The deal would see the EU and UK’s “unwavering commitment” concluded within NATO, while a Labor government would “intensify efforts to maintain close relations with France, Germany, Ireland and Poland”.
“Anglo-German Defense Agreement”
The Labor Party also aims to conclude an Anglo-German defense deal, similar to the Treaty of London signed with France in 2010.
“Our diplomacy must rediscover the art of grand strategy”, said Lammy, who says he wants to pursue a policy guided by “progressive realism”.
The Labor leader, Keir Starmer voted to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum.
However, the center-left party ruled out the possibility of returning to the European single market, the customs union or allowing free movement of citizens again if he comes to power in the United Kingdomwhere the debate over the consequences of Brexit continues to rage.
In mid-April, London dashed Brussels’ hopes by refused to start negotiations to restart youth mobility between the EU and the UK, which paid the price of leaving the EU.
With Brexit, the United Kingdom has largely withdrawn from the Erasmus international exchange program for students. He proposed his own mechanism for students, the Alan Turing program.
Relaunching youth mobility
David Lammy did not rule out the European Commission’s proposal to restart youth mobility and said the issue would “be part of the discussions” that Labor will have with the European executive.
In addition to relations with the EU,Labor positions on diplomacy generally echo those of the current Conservative government.
Like the Conservatives, Labor is expected to continue supporting Ukraine to help it fend off the Russian invasion and pursue a tough policy against China, following recent cases of espionage and cyber attacks implicating Beijing.
