Moviegoers who flock to see “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” in theaters may leave with the same question: What exactly does the cast look like? In the tradition of James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise and the latest “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, “Kingdom” director Wes Ball used innovative motion capture technology to ensure that each ape character in his film was played by a real human being.
Leading star Owen Teague advised Selection that he attended six weeks of “monkey school” to help his transformation into a primate be as plausible as possible. He and the rest of the film’s cast worked with a movement coach to get in touch with their simian sides. They were also equipped with extensions made up of sawn-off crutches to help them move like monkeys. The group had to learn to run on them, using their arms to propel their bodies forward.
“They’re very economical,” Teague said of nailing a primate’s stance. “You don’t see them sit down and then shift to get comfortable. They plant themselves in the appropriate location and remain there. They are so current physically. People are always wiggling their toes and doing things with their hands.
