Although it was announced that Blue blood’ 14th season would be the laststar Tom Selleck says he hopes the show has more time to tell its stories.
The actor spoke with ET’s Rachel Smith on Tuesday, while promoting her new memoir, Never knowand he explained why he feels Blue blood is “a 15-season show.”
“It’s very simple – the way it all happened, we were going to do a 14th season of 18 shows. So, with the strike, we did a season of 10 shows, just like everyone else,” shared Selleck, who stars as Commissioner Frank Reagan on the CBS crime drama.
“But then we kept filming, and we’re filming now,” said Selleck, 79, explaining that Season 14 was split into two parts, with the second half of Season 14 not airing until the fall.
“I’m not going to sit around counting down to (the new episodes). I’m going to remain optimistic, because everyone on the show wants to do it,” Selleck said. “I’m just optimistic.”
When Selleck’s iconic TV show Magnum PI came to an end in 1988, the ending attracted a large audience and the series “was a huge success”, as Selleck explained. He wants Blue blood to have a similar opportunity to come out on top.
“Blue bloodright now, it’s a huge success,” Selleck said. “I’m not talking about this to brag, but (to say that) the people in our program — if and when it ends — deserve this kind of five-star entry on their resume.”
“The reason I talk about this so much is so the audience doesn’t think we’re just slacking off and the show is tired,” Selleck said. “We are as good as ever – and very successful.”
While fans wait for new episodes of Blue blood which airs in October, Selleck has written a memoir about his life in showbusiness and his journey to success.
“I tried to be honest, not exaggerate,” Selleck said of his new book. “I wasn’t going to do a book about who I dated, or about revenge, or about politics – it’s about work… (and my) very long and somewhat accidental career.”
As Selleck explained, he never thought he would be an actor when he was younger, and during college he thought he would be an athlete.
“I had fantasies about being a professional baseball player, but never about acting. And I never did a play, I never studied or anything,” Selleck shared. “I think I was very lucky to grow up in the city where the business is.”
