Luke Newton It’s all to get words of wisdom out of your Bridgerton co-stars. When ET’s Cassie DiLaura visited the set of the hit Netflix series, she spoke with the actor behind Colin Bridgerton, whose relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) will be the center of attention session 3.
The show’s first two seasons followed the love stories of Colin’s siblings, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Antonio (Jonathan Bailey), when they fell in love with Simon (Regé-Jean page) and Kate (Simone Ashley), respectively. After successful seasons, the actors behind the main characters were catapulted into stardom, something Newton admitted was difficult “to even think about.”
“I think right now I have such a limited view within the program. I couldn’t see anything outside of it,” Newton told ET, before sharing that he sought advice from previous protagonists.
“I spoke to Regé recently and I speak to Johnny all the time. It’s like passing on the knowledge of what it’s like to lead the show,” he said. “It’s just amazing to see what everyone on this program did right after and how successful it was. It’s mind-blowing and almost something I don’t even want to think about.”
The story of season 3 will follow a dramatic ending to the previous edition, when Penelope listened to Colin saying he would never dream of courting her.
“That was a difficult scene to film… It was really strange to be so connected to that character, and particularly the relationship and friendship over the last two years, and to suddenly see that complicated moment,” Newton said. “I really had to try to justify it and the way he felt. That’s why I was so excited going into season three, like, how were we going to approach this… There’s a lot of conflict that we have. resolve it before we even move forward.”
Going into season three, Newton said that “one of the really fun parts of playing” is the balance between how Penelope feels about Colin and also how he feels about her.
“They have an incredible friendship,” he noted. “…I think we really dove in and explored his role in helping her find her match.”
This journey may not bring viewers down the road they waitNewton joked.
“We’ve all been speculating for a whole year what next year will be like… but no one could guess what this season would be like… We’re really excited about it,” he said, before teasing whether or not Colin and Penelope are endgame.
“There are times when I think fans will question it, and maybe there will be a bit of a roadblock and they may not want what they wanted before,” he said. “…It’s so exciting.”
From his perspective, though, Newton said he would “have to support” Colin and Penelope as a perfect match.
“I have to. I can’t want their stories to take a different path than the one intended,” he said. “I’m a big fan of the show and this friendship and relationship.”
The ups and downs of the stationsaid Newton, will allow viewers to see a new side of Colin and Penelope.
“It’s all about growth and progression in their relationship, but also self-development, how they grew a little bit over the summer that we didn’t see,” he said. “It was really exciting to come back and feel like there was a new Colin team I could play with. It wasn’t just the same old Colin that I got to play for two years. more robust and mysterious side to him, which is fun.”
The first four episodes of season 3 will premiere on Netflix on May 16. The final three episodes of the season will begin airing on June 13.
