Shots fired. Courtney Love doesn’t mince words when it comes to his opinion on popular music, criticizing some of the industry’s best artists.
In a new interview with the UK The standardLove has less than kind words for some of today’s biggest artists, including Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Beyonce It is Madonna.
“Taylor is not important,” says Love. “She may be a safe space for girls and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.”
As for Del Rey, Love explains that she was once a fan of the Coachella headliner.
“I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she really should take seven years off,” declares Love. “Until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her because she was influencing me too much.”
Love says it’s “great” to see “so many successful women in the music industry” but believes “a lot of them are becoming a cliché.”
“Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is a lot of music. They are all the same,” she tells the channel. “If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a bunch of exactly the same stuff.”
As for the new offer inspired by the country, Cowboy Carter, Love offers an oblique observation.
“I like the idea of Beyoncé making a country record because it’s about black women entering spaces where previously only white women were allowed, not that I really like that,” she says. “As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music.”
When it comes to Madge, the dig feels a little more personal.
“I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me,” declares Love.
Love rose to fame in the 1990s as the lead singer of the alternative band Hole. The California-based group has released a trio of albums – Beautiful inside, live it It is celebrity skin – covering 1991-1998. Love offered a solo project, America’s sweetheartin 2004, before reuniting with the band for the 2010 album, Nobody’s daughter. Hole was nominated for four GRAMMY Awards, but never won.
“People used to say I was difficult,” says Love The standard. “They said I was nasty. Yes, I’m completely nasty and I’ll never apologize for it. I’ve always wanted to be known as a jerk. Being liked has never been my thing.”
Today, Love is promoting her new series BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds Courtney Love Women. The eight-part program serves as a soundtrack highlighting the women in music who have influenced her, peppered with stories and anecdotes from her colorful life. Among the artists who have received Love’s seal of approval are Patti Smith, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Deborah Harry, to name a few.
“I’m trying to redeem some of the women who have been so mistreated by the music industry,” she says. “That is all.”
In her personal life, Love is known for her marriage to rocker Nirvana Kurt Cobain. The couple married in 1992 and welcomed their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, later that year.
Kurt was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington, on April 5, 1994, following a self-inflicted gunshot wound, at the age of 27.
In August 2022, Frances reflected on her 30th birthday.
“As we enter this new decade, I hope to remain gentle no matter how hardened the world may seem at times, enjoy the present moment with reverence, shower the people I am lucky enough to love with more appreciation than words could ever do justice, and maintain space. keep learning, so that growth never stops,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m happy to be here and I’m happy you’re here too. ❤️🔥 ☀️ 🦋”
The following year, she tied the knot with professional skateboarder Riley Hawk – son of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Frances’ best man, REM singer Michael Stipe, officiated the ceremony.
In 2018, Frances opened up to ET about his perspective on making his own mark in the world of music and art.
“Sharing it with the world, that’s part of the contract you sign as an artist is that you send it out and people do with it whatever they want,” she said. “And I think it’s a really cool process.”
