Some movie stars never lose their shine. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over the domestic charts this weekend, with Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire.” and Legendary Leisure grossing $37 million at 3,861 locations during opening day and preview screenings. It’s a formidable debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace it was projected to hit earlier this week, which hit a gap just north of $50 million.
“The New Empire” costs a considerable sum of US$135 million to produce, but it is starting off on the right and gigantic foot. Opinions were mediocre – a notch below the very positive “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and approach under the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. However, the public is not being influenced. The kaiju team appears to be having a great time with audiences, after receiving an “A-” grade from research agency Cinema Rating.
Adam Wingard returns to direct “The New Empire” after directing “Godzilla vs. Kong,” featuring returning cast members including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle alongside franchise newcomers Dan Stevens and Fala Chen. These puny human scientists and fanatics are traveling across the world as the two eponymous monsters leap out of the Hole Earth and form a reluctant partnership to take on some equally gargantuan enemies that threaten humanity.
With a new fifth installment of the franchise on the market, Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is getting a little frozen. The supernatural action comedy will fall to second place in its second year, projecting a gross of $15.5 million. for the body for three days. This would drop 65% since its steady $45 million debut and resolutely keeping up with its predecessor, the 2021 series revival “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which fell just 45%. Now, “Afterlife” has had the advantage of taking advantage of Thanksgiving frames in its second weekend — historically, a much busier movie holiday than Easter. If “Frozen Empire” fails to regain its footing, it will fall well behind its predecessor’s $129 million domestic earnings.
Third place appears to go to Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 3”, in a tight race with Warner Bros. “Dune: middle two.” “Panda” is eyeing another $10 million in its fourth weekend to surpass the $150 million mark. After surpassing 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” in North America, the DreamWorks Animation quartet now appears well-positioned to surpass 2010’s “Kung Fu Panda 2″‘s $165 million haul. The 2008 original will likely remain unchallenged, with US$215 million.
Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” has now lost premium large-format auditoriums to Legendary/Warner Bros.’ production of “Godzilla vs. Kong.” The Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi sequel is still doing well, although the income $3.6 million on Friday, down just 20% from the $4.4 million it took weekly in the past. The feature is still the biggest hit of the year and will reach an impressive $250 million this weekend.
Neon’s nun horror film “Immaculate” appears to be in the top five, with commercial rivals projecting a three-day gross of $3.1 million. and a 41% drop for the Sydney Sweeney shocker. It will soon bring home $10 million – a stable consequence for the modestly budgeted production.
