The next time we see a Pirates of the Caribbean film will be significantly different – as the next film in the franchise will apparently be a reboot of the property.
This is according to the franchise’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In an interview with ComicBook.comThey asked him if he thought of a new Superior weapon or one Pirates of the Caribbean the film would hit the screen next. He did not have a clear answer to that question – but indicated that Pirates is going the route of a reboot, saying…
It is hard to say. You don’t know, you really don’t know… you don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have a brilliant, iconic actor. And how many films he made before Top Gun, I can’t say. But let’s reboot Pirates, so it’s easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.

The actor in question here is obviously Johnny Deepwho was the central figure in the previous five Pirates films like Captain Jack Sparrow. Although the franchise was hugely successful in its first films, the most recent film in the series, 2017 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, I got terrible reviews and grossed less than $800 million in theaters – still a lot of money, but a far cry from the $1 billion grossed by several of the previous films, and against a reported budget of around $300 million.
In the years since Dead men tell no storiesthere were several Pirates projects in development at Disney, some with Depp, some without, and at least one that would have been a female-centric spinoff that focused on a character played by Margot Robbie. Seven years later, none of these films have entered production.
Although Depp has become strongly identified with Piratesthe concept predates it by several decades – the first film was inspired by the popular Disneyland attraction (which, it should be noted, now includes Depp animatronics like Jack Sparrow).
Bruckheimer Ministry of War Ungentlemanly is scheduled to open in theaters on April 19.
