Jake Gyllenhaal recently opened up on “The Howard Stern Show” about what it was like to lose two leading roles during the remaining casting rounds: Batman in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” and Christian in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge”! In the last film, the audition process reached Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger and Ewan McGregor. It was here that Gyllenhaal first heard of Ledger, who would later become his co-star in “Brokeback Mountain.”
“What I felt was disappointment at not having made it. Both Heath and I were disenchanted,” said Gyllenhaal. “But that’s the Ewan McGregor part. You learn to say, ‘There’s another one. I might try to get in and audition for someone else. I’m going to get one more thing. You keep that perspective.”
Gyllenhaal maintained this healthy mindset when he lost “Batman Begins” just a few years after “Moulin Rouge!” in love with. David S. Goyer, who created the story for “Batman Begins” and co-wrote the script with Nolan, recently confirmed rumors that Gyllenhaal was his personal choice to play Batman in Nolan’s trilogy. Christian Bale finally got the role.
“To (Nolan’s) credit and Baz’s (Luhrmann’s) credit, both administrators called me personally to tell me (I didn’t get the role),” Gyllenhaal said. “And they will let you know why. When you get this far, there is a real legitimacy to your probably achieving something. It’s not like they’re saying, ‘Oh, thank you very much.’ They say, ‘I saw these elements of you that I really wanted on paper and they’re fantastic, but in the end I ended up moving this way because it suits best this one that is opposite you or will be opposite you.’ The color of the hair or the beak, it doesn’t matter!! There are all these non-components that are basically inexplicable things that when you start to pick and choose, it doesn’t work, it’s not healthy.
“For me, I just say, ‘Take a look at how much you bought! So try to continue. That’s what I felt,” continued the actor. “I remember getting a call from Christopher Nolan and thinking, ‘I just got a call from Christopher Nolan in person. This is really cool. I’ve come quite far. I went from they’re not sure (about me) to a name saying they’re really fascinated by you for this movie. So, okay, I should continue. I should just keep going.
Gyllenhaal was coming off the disaster film “Tomorrow” when Nolan thought of him for “Batman Begins.” Although he didn’t get to play the Caped Crusader, ditching the role opened the door for him to do acclaimed films like “Brokeback Mountain” and “Jarhead,” both of which opened the same year as Nolan’s comic book tentpole. . Gyllenhaal recently told Screen Rant that he would still be interested in playing Batman.
“Oh man. This is a traditional (role). It’s an honor,” Gyllenhaal responded. “Speaking of playing roles that other amazing actors have played in the past… When I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in ‘Othello’ with Denzel Washington , and I take into account the history of actors who have played this role over time, and I’m intimidated by it. So that’s the first degree. That’s what I’m working on now. But really. It could be an honor at all times .These types of questions and individual roles are classic.”
