Utopia’s Circle Collective label has purchased Bruce LaBruce’s bold and thought-provoking film “The Customer” for North America and the United Kingdom. Represented in international markets by Finest Buddy Without End, “The Customer” had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section.
A London remake of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 film Theorem, The Client stars well-known efficiency artist Bishop Black as a refugee who emerges naked from a mysterious suitcase on the banks of the Thames. Entering the life of a privileged white family, he becomes their worker and wins over all family members in a series of express encounters where taboos are broken.
The cast is led by Macklin Kowal, Amy Kingsmill, Luca Federici, Ray Filar and Kurtis Lincoln. The film was presented as the creation of A/political, a work of art and activist, throughout Frieze London, an honest contemporary work of art.
LaBruce said he wanted “The Customer” to “pay homage to Pasolini’s masterpiece by reimagining it through the lens of recent queer aesthetics and sexual politics. The filmmaker added that he also strived to “ground it in the wider socio-political context of the rise of the far right in the UK”. and Europe, with its racist insurance policies and techniques of defamation, humiliation and sexualization of the “opposite”.
Utopia and Circle Collective executive Kyle Greenberg described “The Customer” as a “brilliant, radical work of art.” “Imbued with LaBruce’s renegade spirit, plus a surplus of sex and subversiveness, ‘The Consumer’ is a refreshing, urgent and dangerous piece of cinema that you dare not ignore,” Greenberg said in a statement.
“The Customer” is a Manufacturing A/politics. The producers are Victor Fraga and Alex Babboni. The script was written by LaBruce, Fraga and Babboni. The core team is led by director of photography Jack Hamilton and editor Judy Landkammer, rated by Hannah Holland.
This deal was negotiated by Candace Tan for Circle Collective with Finest Buddy Without End co-founders Charles Bin and Martin Gondre on behalf of the filmmakers.
LaBruce’s previous credits include “Hustler White” and “Gerontophilia,” which won the Grand Prix at the Festival Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal.
