How would you describe this show in 15 words or less?
What happens when a young girl’s actions – her fateful decision – change the course of humanity.
How would you describe your character?
Therefore, I can say that Ye is a survivor of severe trauma and has lost everything. Consequently, she has learned a form of adaptability and also has a bit of survivor’s guilt. She is a mother. And at the same time, she believes that she has the ability to impact change, and I feel like she does that in the easiest way that she feels she has the potential.
Inside her, she is still partly young Ye, because she was a prodigy, and that exists in her too. And that realization in itself, that her selections are the accurate selections, and she will impact change. Even when everything goes wrong, it will impact change.
Did you read the books before signing up?
I’m here (in the USA) and I have a vision of that American tunnel. So I’m a philistine and I’d never heard of a ‘Three-Body Handicap’ until Benny Wong – we were both in London, working on different projects, and he told me he was working on it. And I thought, “What is this?” But then I read the book. I had a Chinese coach who insisted that I read the book before I started filming, and he was very strict.
But when I read it, I got a lot of copies for other people because I really feel like it’s accessible. And then they made it much more accessible. I was very interested and I love the books, even though I’m not, – I’m a nerd, but I’m not a fan of science fiction by any means.
And as far as what I took away from this, is that this point is elastic.
Do you imagine that humanity will be in contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life?
I imagine the potential of something. You know, without a doubt, before this, someone would say something about aliens, and inside I would roll my eyes and say, “Oh, yeah, that could happen.” But now I’m a little more open to the “potential of something.” We don’t know what’s on the market. Just what we see, feel, hear and contact is not necessarily what is real. There is much more on the market that we are not aware of.
How did you work with Zine Tseng to create the character?
Zine filmed his role first. Her last day was my first day, so I got all her footage before I started. I mostly lived with Zine before I even met her. So when I met her, it was like meeting a star – or meeting another side of me. In fact, she built the construction, she created the inspiration.
