Olivia Munnis opening up about her health struggles… revealing that she’s been battling breast cancer for almost a year and also saying that she underwent a double mastectomy.
The actress shared a series of photos to IG on Wednesday, showing her in a hospital gown – running a battery of tests on her. She also posted a video of herself crying while lying in a hospital bed as a medical professional appeared to comfort her.
Munn also dropped text messages explaining her cancer journey so far in more detail — the first time anyone has heard about it — and admitting that she kept it a secret for a while.
According to Munn, she had a mammogram last year… and was diagnosed with breast cancer in late April. She said she has had four surgeries since her diagnosis and spent several days lying in a hospital bed.
Munn added that she only had the mammogram because her obstetrician convinced her after calculating that her possible risk was about 37%… and the MRI led to the diagnosis of Luminal B cancer – an aggressive form of breast cancer – in each of her breasts.
OM says she had a double mastectomy shortly after, despite feeling completely fine… and she encourages other women to see their gynecologist to have their own cancer risk assessed early and often.
Munn thanked friends and family in the post… specifically mentioning her partner, comedian John Mulaney, for all the support he’s given her during this difficult time. In fact, Munn appeared with John Sunday at the Oscars… and no one suspected anything about it.
She goes on to say that she kept a framed photo of John and her son Malcolm by her bed during every medical procedure… making sure it was the first thing she saw when she woke up.
Olivia didn’t mention being cancer-free or in remission in her post… so it’s unclear if she’s out of the woods on that front.
Either way, it was brave of her to come forward and share this. She’s getting a lot of praise too.
